Refining Filters Used for Custom Tokens at Multilingual Churches

Follow

If you are using custom tokens at a multilingual church, it is likely that you are also using filters to determine which volunteers see which tokens. For example, if your church has both English-speaking volunteers and Spanish-speaking volunteers, you may want some custom tokens to only show for the Spanish speakers and others to only show for the English speakers.

In such cases, if a volunteer is qualified in both English and Spanish ministries, or lists both English and Spanish service preferences, that volunteer will see both custom tokens unless we refine our filters to prevent this from happening.

To make it so that in such cases our bilingual volunteers only see the English text, we need to set up the filter for the Spanish custom tokens so that they will only show to Spanish-speaking volunteers who do NOT have any English ministry qualifications / service preferences. To set this up, we will need to make use of the "NOT group" filter in the Edit Filter window:

Filtering by Ministry Qualifications

If we are filtering by ministry qualification, we need to scroll down the list of filters on the left-hand side until we see the "NOT group" filter, then click on it to add it to our list of filters. Once we've done this, we need to click on the "Ministries" filter again -- this will put a second, empty "Ministries" filter inside of our "NOT group" filter. We need to add our English ministries to this new filter -- when we are finished, the Edit Filter window should look something like this:

This will prevent volunteers who are qualified in both English and Spanish ministries from seeing both the English and the Spanish custom tokens -- if they are qualified in both, they will only see the English token.

Filtering by Service Preference

If we are filtering by service preference, we need to scroll down the list of filters on the left-hand side until we see the "NOT group" filter, then click on it to add it to our list of filters. Once we've done this, we need to click on the "Service preferences" filter again -- this will put a second, empty "Service preferences" filter inside of our "NOT group" filter. We need to add our English service times to this new filter -- when we are finished, the Edit Filter window should look something like this:

This will prevent volunteers who serve at both English and Spanish services from seeing both the English and the Spanish custom tokens -- if they serve at both, they will only see the English token.
