Depending on the outcome you are trying to achieve, there are some times when subdivisions may be a better choice than labeling your ministry positions. Here are some of those times:
- You have different, specific needs at each service. For example, if your larger service requires positions for Cup 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 but a smaller one requires the specific set of Cup 1, 3, and 5, you will want to use subdivisions to set up your services. In this particular case, you could set up 5 different subdivisions for cup, or you could set up different subdivisions for each service and use separate labels for each.
- Volunteers want to serve (or not serve) in specific positions. For example, you may have some volunteers who are uncomfortable with the first reading and only want to be Reader 2. This is a good time to use subdivisions instead of labels.
- Volunteers in each position do different jobs, and you want them to get a good variety of performing each of those tasks. For example, if your Ushers can either work the door or seat your volutneers or work the welcome desk, you may want to use subdivisions so they get a good rotation of doing all 3 and are not always scheduled for the same task.
